In the eastern part of South Tyrol, nestled in the mountains of the
Ultimo range, an offshoot of the Ortles group, not far
from the spa town of Merano, lies the beautiful Val d’Ultimo.
The municipality of Ultimo (Ulten in German) is composed of the four districts
of Santa Valburga, the main village, Pracupola, San Nicolò and Santa Geltrude.
This valley belongs to the Merano tourist region, in the sunny Burggrafenamt.
The attraction lies chiefly in its authentic scenery, which has remained
unchanged by time, inviting you to take long walks. Don’t miss those in the
nearby Stelvio national park, or on the pastures and mountains
that surround the valley. Ultimo also offers many opportunities for mountain
biking with various levels of difficulty.
An absolutely extraordinary
natural attraction are the famous ancient larches which according to recent
laboratory research are around 850 years old and have deservedly been declared a
UNESCO World Heritage. Their location in the valley bottom is certainly one of
the most characteristic in South Tyrol.
But Ultimo in the Merano region
also has plenty to offer for your winter holiday: at the continuously growing
Schwemmalm ski district you can have fun on the slopes and then
enjoy the après-ski scene.
